Behind the Scenes Blog

We wanted to give everyone a chance to see what happens behind the scenes as we work on gear reviews, project builds, events, and meeting other Explorers.
New territory and tweaks while busy

Well I will be exploring some pretty new territory in about a month...

I just got off the phone with a pysc facility that is seeing many more amputees and would like an inservice on working with people who are facing new limb loss and how to inspire and interact with them.

First will be an inservice for staff and then the hope is to do presentations to the patients so they can get beyond depression (not sure if we can inspire the manic, schiz or ocd).

In my work as a RN I dealt with pysch patients all the time, but this will be a new combo for me, which is the best way to learn.

On a more normal DE note...the WAVE is back at the Sportsmobile factory for some tweaks that came from our time with a few disabled folks last week. I am beat from working sat night, driving phx to fresno sun, flying back to phx yesterday then working last night (I am grateful for the overtime to pay for all the rig stuff but sometimes it wears ya down).

I should be headed back out to Fresno on Friday, drive back to Phx overnight and show up at the Pavillions car show Sat night.

Then Sunday already have a powerchair user scheduled for a bit of a wheel/picnic adventure.

Watch for pics soon....

Disability Awareness Merit Badge
Sorry no pics for this update... But we took the WAVE to our local Boy Scout Troop to get them excited about the Disability Awareness Merit Badge I will be teaching very soon. The rig really opened the boys eyes has to how the disabled could access remote areas and we heard several comments about how much they never appreciated their ability to hike. The merit badge will require service hours by the boys, so watch for them to help with some upcoming DE events, site visits to other local non-profits and I really hope the boys gain the ability to see past the physical limitations and get to know the person they meet.

The Work Balance
I know it says somewhere on this site that we are volunteer run and donation supported. And it really is true! Currently I am struggling with the balance between needed to work in order to put more money into our projects and plans vs. the time needed as a volunteer working on the projects and making the plans. Luckily my job as an ICU RN at night allows me some time during the day either before I sleep or after to make calls, visit shops or get some gear tested and photographed. Our hope is to reach a level where we can seek out monetary support for our projects or outings. At this time we rely on private donations by individuals and product donations by companies. If you are disabled or able bodied and have a skill your would like to contribute from web work to marketing to who knows what, please get in touch and make a difference.

Movie night in Prescott
Overland Journal
Overland Journal & Expeditions West
One of the reasons any disabled or able bodied person should be a part of local 4wd groups is for the fun outings as a group. www.expeditionportal.com has a forum that is sponsored by the Expeditions West folks who just so happen to also be a part of the Overland Journal world. And best of all they are based in Prescott Arizona which is just a couple hours north of us here in Phoenix. So this Saturday they are hosting a trail run and movie night. If you are Phoenix based go join the forum, get the info and come on out. The shop is fully accessible and everyone there is very accepting of the Disabled Explorers concept.
